National Mathematics Day 2024 pays tribute to the extraordinary mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan, whose groundbreaking contributions have left an indelible mark on the world of mathematics. Born on December 22, 1887, in Erode, Tamil Nadu, Ramanujan displayed an innate talent for mathematics from a young age, despite lacking formal training in the subject. By the time of his untimely demise at the age of 32, he had contributed over 3900 mathematical formulas, many of which continue to guide modern mathematical research.

This day celebrates not only Ramanujan’s brilliance but also the spirit of mathematical inquiry and innovation. His work on infinite series, number theory, and continued fractions revolutionized these fields, inspiring generations of mathematicians worldwide. On this occasion, we honor his legacy and aim to inspire young minds to explore the wonders of mathematics, just as he did with his unmatched passion and perseverance.

The development of mathematics was a collective effort, with contributions from various civilizations and scholars. The Muslim civilization made significant advancements in the field of mathematics, with Al-Khwarizmi often regarded as the “Father of Algebra.”

Contributions of Al-Khwarizmi :-

  1. Algebra:
    • Al-Khwarizmi laid the foundation of algebra. His book, “Kitab al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wal-Muqabala”, became the cornerstone of modern algebra.
    • The term “algebra” is derived from the Arabic word “al-jabr,” which appears in the title of his book.
  2. Decimal System:
    • He introduced Indian numerals (0-9) and the decimal system to the Western world.
  3. Trigonometry:
    • Muslim mathematicians, including Al-Khwarizmi, made notable advancements in trigonometry.

Contributions of Other Genius Mathematicians :-

  1. Omar Khayyam:
    • Worked on solutions for cubic equations and made significant contributions to geometry.
  2. Al-Biruni:
    • Made remarkable contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and geometry.
  3. Ibn al-Haytham:
    • Revolutionized the fields of mathematics and optics with his groundbreaking work.

Thus, it is fair to say that Muslim scholars played a crucial role in the development of mathematics and in bringing it to Europe, leaving a lasting legacy on the field.
